Despite the
view from our room, our stay at
Hotel Panorama was a pleasant one. We received excellent service, including empathy from a bellboy who saw my initial disappointment.
The service staff were all very friendly, attentive to our needs, and ever ready to provide help. I also liked the cool-looking bottles of water that were left in our rooms and replaced everyday.
The Roof Terrace and 38th floor Santa Lucia Restaurant were where we enjoyed beautiful views of the harbour. The restaurant in particular was a quiet refuge from the heat and buzz outside. Great for a mid-day break to rest tired legs and sip iced coffee.
On our last day, a young, bespectacled bellboy who helped us with our luggage asked if we were returning to Singapore. I replied with an affirmative, and asked if he has been to Singapore.
He said: No, but I know your President.
Me: Our President?
Bellboy: Yes, Mr Lee. He made the country to be very good.
Bellboy (excitedly): Yes!
It was not unlike my stay in Shanghai, where almost every official we spoke to sang praises of our very first Prime Minister, now Minister Mentor. For all his critics, no one can disagree that he is a remarkable man.
